GreenPower is energy produced by generators that have been accredited by government as having minimal environmental impact. GreenPower generators can use wind, solar, waste, or certain forms of hydro or tidal power.
When we say you are "on" GreenPower we mean you are paying a GreenPower generator to replace the energy you take out of the electricity grid. Otherwise your energy will simply be replaced by power from a fossil fuel generator.
The GreenPower generator gets two payments for its electricity. One standard power payment which comes out of your standard power retailer's charges, and the other directly from us. Once you have paid a GreenPower premium to a retailer or a provider like Ark Climate, this premium along with a standard power payment gets paid to a GreenPower generator.
Ark Climate is known as a "decoupled" GreenPower provider. This means it is not involved in the billing process for standard power charges but only for the billing of the GreenPower premium.
Decoupled allows a consumer to search for the lowest price standard power retailer and still have access to the lowest price GreenPower. Some retailers subsidise their GreenPower prices with higher priced standard contracts or vice versa. Decoupled also works out cheaper as it more closely reflects the wholesale market price, along with having greater transparency as the GreenPower is not "blended" with other forms of non accredited energy contracts.
